This project secures approval under Class Q to convert a defined portion of the existing barn into a high-quality residential unit. Rather than redeveloping the whole structure, the approach carefully utilises only part of the building, ensuring the remainder continues to operate for agricultural purposes.
The design works with the existing form, retaining the traditional dual-pitch roof and the robust simplicity of the original structure. New openings are positioned with discipline and purpose, allowing natural light to enter deep into the plan without compromising the agricultural character of the building.

By partially converting the barn rather than replacing it, the proposal minimises intervention and maximises efficiency. The retained agricultural section ensures the site continues to function as intended, preserving its rural identity and operational use.
Internally, the converted element delivers bright, contemporary living spaces framed by the existing structure. The architectural language remains simple and restrained, allowing the strength of the original agricultural form to lead the design.
This project demonstrates how Class Q can be used intelligently, not as a cosmetic change, but as a strategic evolution of a working rural building.
