Barrow House - South Derbyshire

This grade 2 listed stables project is envisioned with a contemporary aesthetic while preserving its historic qualities to remain true to its heritage. The site, once home to the stables of the historic Barrow Hall, has stood in a state of decay since the unfortunate fire that consumed the main building. The stables, despite their dilapidated condition, retain a sense of character and history that is intrinsic to the local heritage. Acknowledging the significance of this site, we were chosen to breathe new life into the run down building, a task that requires a delicate balance of modern design and preservation of the structures' historical essence.

Our vision was to restore the stables while honouring the architectural features that remain. This involves utilising sustainable materials and practices that respect the original craftsmanship, ensuring that the resulting design not only meets contemporary needs but also tells the story of Barrow Hall’s legacy. By reimagining the stables, we aimed to create a space that serves the community anew while preserving the poignant memories of its past.

Ground Floor

The architectural design incorporates a prominent glazed entrance, strategically positioned to flood the lobby with natural light, taking advantage of the front elevation, which was the sole aspect available for alteration. This approach optimizes illumination within the space.

The ground floor layout presents a generously proportioned kitchen diner, complemented by an intimate snug to the left, fostering both practicality and a sense of warmth. The external façade skilfully blends traditional aesthetics with contemporary elements, forming a cohesive visual narrative that honours the building’s historical context while embracing a forward-looking perspective.

Two elegantly designed double garages are positioned on the opposite side of the residence, complementing its overall aesthetic. Adjacent to this architectural feature, a state-of-the-art gym offers a contemporary space for fitness enthusiasts, seamlessly integrated into the luxurious environment of the home.

Upper Floor

The grand double wrap-around stairway serves as a stunning focal point, gracefully connecting the two levels of this luxurious residence. As you ascend, the enchanting mechanics of the old clock tower can be admired, offering a glimpse into the nostalgia of craftsmanship combined with modern design. The stairway opens up to exquisite views of the courtyard, framed by the large glazed entrance that invites natural light to fill the space.

In the stables portion, a master suite awaits, thoughtfully designed for relaxation, complemented by two separate bedrooms that cater to family and guests. The versatile layout includes a games room, perfect for leisure and entertainment, along with an additional bedroom in the other part of the house, ensuring ample space for comfortable living. Each section of this home seamlessly blends elegance with practicality, creating an atmosphere that truly embodies refined living.
